A Semi-Rural Development with a Contempoary Twist
E3 Architecture secured planning approval for a residential development comprising five individually designed dwellings, carefully tailored to respond to their semi-rural context. The scheme balances contemporary architectural expression with a strong sensitivity to the surrounding landscape, ensuring that scale, form, and materiality sit comfortably within the local setting while delivering a distinctive sense of place.
The design approach maximises the site’s development potential without compromising its relationship to the wider village and countryside. Building forms are articulated to break down massing, with carefully considered rooflines, proportions, and detailing that reference local vernacular architecture while introducing a refined, modern character. The arrangement of the dwellings creates a coherent layout that promotes privacy, outlook, and a strong sense of arrival.
Following initial refusal driven by local political opposition, E3 Architecture successfully progressed the scheme through the planning appeal process. The appeal was allowed, with the proposals recognised for their design quality, contextual response, and compliance with planning policy. As a result, a full award of costs was granted against the Local Planning Authority, acknowledging the unreasonable nature of the refusal.
The approved scheme was subsequently granted consent under delegated powers and has since become the preferred development option. The project demonstrates E3 Architecture’s expertise in navigating complex planning environments, delivering resilient design solutions, and securing successful outcomes through both negotiation and appeal, while maintaining a strong commitment to architectural quality.
