A refreshing take on fast food
Fresh Fuel, Ancoats transforms a redundant office and storage building within the Ancoats Conservation Area into a distinctive new destination for a growing independent food brand. The project responds carefully to its historic context, balancing contemporary identity with the industrial character that defines the neighbourhood, and demonstrating how modest buildings can play a meaningful civic role.
A zinc-clad vertical ‘chimney’ element forms the project’s primary architectural gesture, referencing the mill chimneys that once shaped Ancoats’ skyline while providing a clear and confident street presence. Locally sourced brickwork, generous window openings, and restrained detailing establish a dialogue between old and new, allowing the intervention to feel both rooted and contemporary.
The landlocked nature of the site presented significant logistical challenges, with a single elevation required to accommodate access, servicing, refuse, and fire escape. Through careful spatial planning, a full commercial kitchen was located at first floor level and supported by a dedicated goods lift, preserving the ground floor for customer engagement and ensuring efficient operation within a compact footprint.
Sustainability was integral to the project’s approach. Over 50% of the existing building fabric was retained, significantly reducing embodied carbon, while targeted fabric upgrades and efficient building services delivered a 48% reduction in operational emissions compared to the original condition. The result is a finely crafted, efficient building that contributes positively to the street and continues Ancoats’ ongoing story of adaptive reuse and urban renewal.
