Located at the heart of the Chapel Allerton Conservation Area, the project has secured full planning permission for the conversion, separation, and substantial extension of a historic stable building situated within the grounds of a Victorian residence. The proposals seek to give new life to an underutilised heritage asset, transforming it into a high-quality standalone family home while respecting the historic context of the wider estate.
The existing stable block is to be significantly enlarged, with the overall accommodation increased to approximately three times its original size. Careful consideration has been given to the scale and massing of the development, ensuring that the converted stables remain visually and hierarchically subordinate to the principal dwelling. This is achieved through a carefully articulated form and a stepped, split-level layout that responds to the site’s topography.
Internally, the split-level arrangement allows for generous, light-filled living spaces while minimising the perceived bulk of the extensions when viewed from the surrounding gardens and neighbouring properties. The layout has been designed to provide a clear and intuitive flow between living, private, and service areas, creating a comfortable and functional family home suited to modern living.
Material selection and detailing draw directly from the existing fabric of the stables and the architectural language of the Victorian house. Traditional masonry, appropriately scaled openings, and high-quality contemporary insertions are combined to create a cohesive and sensitive design. The completed scheme secures the long-term use of the historic building while enhancing the character and appearance of the Chapel Allerton Conservation Area.
