Church House, located at 1 South Parade, is a Grade II listed Georgian end-of-terrace townhouse within the Wakefield South Parade Conservation Area. Dating back to circa 1790, the building has played a prominent civic role in the city, most recently serving as the headquarters of the Diocese of Wakefield. Prior to redevelopment, the property had fallen vacant and suffered from neglect, unauthorised alterations, and a loss of its original residential character, presenting both a challenge and an opportunity for sensitive regeneration
E3 Architecture secured full planning permission and listed building consent for the comprehensive redevelopment of the building into a mix of 10 high-quality residential apartments, incorporating conversion, extension, and carefully considered external works. The approved scheme represents a balanced approach to heritage-led development, ensuring the long-term viability of the listed building while delivering contemporary living accommodation appropriate to its historic context.

A full heritage assessment was undertaken by E3 Architecture to justify the change of use and guide the design process. Key historic features and the building’s primary architectural significance were retained and restored, while later, non-historic interventions were removed. The design enhances the building’s setting through discreet extensions and improvements to secondary elevations, allowing modern requirements for space, light, and amenity to be met without compromising the integrity of the original Georgian fabric.
Internally, the scheme delivers luxury accommodation with generous layouts, complemented by high-quality private and communal amenity spaces. Externally, sensitive landscaping and external works improve the relationship between the building and its surroundings while reinforcing its contribution to the conservation area. The project demonstrates E3 Architecture’s expertise in navigating complex heritage constraints, successfully transforming a historically significant building into a sustainable and desirable residential development.
