The Grade II listed Coach House, dating back to 1837, is one of Yorkshire’s most distinctive and bespoke residential properties. What began as the sensitive refurbishment of the original Coach House has evolved into a landmark scheme that respectfully expands the site’s accommodation to over 9,000 sq ft through carefully considered architectural additions.
The design is organised into four interconnected structures — or ‘wings’ — each inspired by the forms of the original buildings and the geometry of the former walled garden. These wings are linked through framed views, glazed connections and subtle shifts in massing, creating a composition that feels both contemporary and rooted in the site’s historic character.
Throughout the project, deliberate juxtapositions bring richness to the experience of the home: a central topiary garden acts as a formal anchor; a water feature draws the eye across the courtyard; and carefully placed openings offer glimpses from one structure into another. The result is a series of spaces that invite exploration yet remain highly functional, with a clear spatial hierarchy.
E3 Architecture secured full planning and listed building consent for the scheme and oversaw the project through multiple design iterations, managing its delivery to completion in June 2025.
